I, Thomas N. R a b e, was born on February 18, 1951 in Heidelberg, Germany. Medical studies at the University of Heidelberg from 1969-1975. 1972 medical doctoral thesis in biochemistry (highest score: "summa cum laude"). 1975 medical stateboard examinations with excellent marks ("summa cum laude"). 1976 "Approbation als Arzt".

 

1976-1983: Residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Heidelberg, Women´s Hospital, Department OB/GYN  (Chairman: Prof. Dr. med. Kubli). 1983 "Facharzt in Gynäkologie und Geburtshilfe" (fully licened obstetrician and gynecologist). 1976-1999 coworker of  Prof. Dr. med. B. Runnebaum (Division of Gynecological Endocrinology, Heidelberg); reserach topics:  steroid biosynthesis, regulation of human placental progesterone synthesis, fertility control, hyperandrogenaemia, assisted reproduction, hormone pulse analysis. 1984 assistant professorship in OB/GYN (Privatdozent für Gynäkologie und Geburtshilfe) and 1991 a full professorship (associate Professor) ("außerplanmäßiger Professor") in OB/GYN. 1995-1999 I have been responsible for scientific activities of our WHO collaborating centre (Geneve, Switzerland).

 

More than 200 scientific publications and more than 20 textbooks as author  or coauthor (partially translated into 10 languages): e.g., Rabe & Runnebaum: Kontrazeption, Springer 1983; Runnebaum, Rabe, Kiesel: Future aspects in Contraception: Male  and Female, MTP, Lancaster, 1985; Runnebaum & Rabe: Gynäkologische Endokrinologie, Springer 1987 and 1994 (German and English edition); Rabe: Gynäkologie und Geburtshilfe, Lehrbuch, 1989; Rabe: Memorix (Pocket Guide): Gynecology and Obstetrics, 1991; Rabe, Runnebaum (eds):  Fertility Control, Springer, 1998; Rabe, Diedrich, Runnebaum (eds): Manual on Assisted Reproduction 1997, 2nd edition 2000;  Rabe & Strowitzi (eds): Lifestyle and Anti-Aging Medizin (1999, 2000, 2001)

 

I  am a member of the editorial board of several  journals:  Journal of Gynecological Endocrinology, Zeitschrift für Fertilität, European Journal of Contraception, Reproduktionsmedizin, Aktuelle Endokrinologie und Stoffwechsel, Labormedizin.

 

Awards: 1996: Doctor honoris causa of the I. Semmelweis University Medical School, Budapest,  Hungary; 1997: Doctor honoris causa, Bega-Clinic, Timisoara, Romania; 1999: Doctor honoris causa, University Womens' Hospital, Klausenburg, Romania. In 2002 a received a honorary professorship at the University Carol Davila in Bucharest, Romania.

 

Since 1999 I am president of the German Society of Gynecological Endocrinology and Reproductive Medicine and Member of the board of directors of the German Society of OB/Gyn. Since 2002 vicepresident of the German-Romanian/Romanian-German Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

 

Recently I refused a call as chairman for a professorship of Gynecolgical Endocrinology and Reproductive Medicine at the Charite university hospital in Berlin, Germany.
